About Melat

Melat Kiros is a Denver Democrat running for Colorado’s 1st Congressional district. She’s part of a new generation of leadership who isn’t afraid to speak truth to power and fight for bold, lasting change. From skyrocketing rent to the cost of groceries and health care, she’s running to bring real relief to Denver families. She is the daughter of Ethiopian immigrants, a lawyer, and a PhD student in Public Affairs. As someone who’s working as a barista to help pay for school and afford healthcare, Melat knows how hard we’re all working to get ahead.

Melat is the only candidate in the race who rejects corporate PAC funding and is dead set on getting big money out of our politics. That’s because she believes our elected leaders should be accountable to the people—not to wealthy donors or corporate lobbyists. After losing her job for speaking out against the genocide in Palestine and defending the student protestors, she’s seen firsthand how broken the system is, and she’s ready to shake it up by pushing for real campaign finance reform and making sure working people—not just the wealthy and powerful—have a voice in Washington.

She’s fighting not just to fix what’s broken, but to build something better. She’s committed to bold policy solutions like Medicare for All, housing first, universal childcare, and an arms embargo. Melat’s running to take back our party and government for the people, to build an economy that works for everyone, and to protect our basic human rights here and abroad.
